One of the most enjoyable books I read in a long time! I found it to be very easy reading so much so I couldn't put it down. The characters were so real, I thought I was reading about people in my own life. The story and subplots are wonderful, a great tribute to ancient family values. Makes me appreciate my own elders and their cultural stories. I must say based on the title I was expecting a whole different story and was pleasantly surprised by such a well written, highly detailed and in depth storyline. I hope a sequel is in the works, can't wait to find out what's next!Product details

The Summer of Pomba Gira is fun, witty, and absolutely fabulous. It explores many dimensions of family, love, and self exploration. Reading SOPG is like exploring your own sense of soul while indulging on a fine glass of wine! On top of that, Pomba Gira is one sultry mama, and Oleander Main taps into that energy with style and perfection.
I have read this book several times and each time I do I find something new to think about. This is truly a unique story that has something that can speak to each person who reads it. I can't wait until Ms. Main writes another story.
After reading the first few pages, I was hooked...the author's clever descriptions made me feel as if I was actually a part of the story...the more I read, the more I became actively invested in the characters' lives. The story evokes different emotions...it is at times humorous and edgy, but always with an underlying spirituality and complexity. As with all great books, each reader will have a slightly different perspective after reading the book and will be able to apply it in a unique, personally meaningful way. A beautifully and authentically-written book!
I've read The Summer of Pomba Gira several times, and find the characters very real and believable. There's a spiritual aspect to the book that I also found very appealing. No matter who we are or what our "rank" in society, we sometimes find ourselves in situations where we feel powerless and out of control. We pray for help, but don't always recognize those people and forces around us that are there to help us and empower us through our struggles. So be careful what you pray for and keep your heart and mind open. Will there be a sequel?
I really liked this book for several reasons. One, it caught my attention and kept it after the first few pages. I positively devour books that interest me and this one kept me up turning pages late at night. I also enjoyed following the themes running through this book that weaved the story to a broader whole. This book will challenge the way you think and how you perceive. It was a delight to read the very first of many more stories to come.
This book is really phenomenal. She has created a world for real people to live in. And so her characters' lives play out on a multitude of dimensions spiritual, emotional, physical, with the clumsy grace that befits the truly human. The fullness of their lives, and her perception of it, is life-affirming in the very best of ways. If you enjoy fiction's ability to weed through the masses to introduce you to people who are willing to be "real" then you will enjoy this book.
