Char of the Real People walked out of a mud-hole she didn't walk into, wearing a deerskin skirt and carrying a crude spear. Then the murders started.

Char is a unique blend of police procedural and alternate reality, with county sheriff Francine Hart relentlessly pursuing clues--footprints and blood samples--that point to a murderess who is human-like, but not our kind of human.

Whatever else Char of the Real People is, Sheriff Hart discovers that her quarry is brilliant and supremely adaptable, eluding police again and again. Can even the smartest fugitive escape a modern police dragnet and get back to her own reality?

When the author posted a request on a discussion board to which I subscribe for members to nominate his book in Kindle Scout, I was intrigued and gave it my vote. Even though it wasn't selected for publication through that program, I bought it and dove into it as soon as it became available. The book is well written with three-dimensional characters and a riveting 'what if' scenario. The plot could have come off as pretty hokey and predictable 'B-movie' faire, but Cozort thought through the details and based them on valid science wherever possible and built in enough clever plot twists to keep the reader engaged. And while the plot is neatly tied up by the last page, there are enough details left open that a sequel could be written--I hope.

Char eBook Dale Cozort Reviews

A midnight paintball game at Todd Davis's farm in Wisconsin turns into a real 'woo woo' mystery! Rich, Todd and Bruce become involved in a crime scene investigation spearheaded by Sheriff Hart. Spearheaded is quite appropriate as a female is pursued that is from the Real People and an alternate reality. And, yes the reader will be invited along to suspend some of their beliefs as this story develops.

For me, I appreciated the fact that two of the main characters are female - Sheriff Hart and of course, Char the mysterious woman in her 20's. Toss in some murders, some earlier drug deals gone awry and a retired COL Darius Reid that has served some prison time. Those latter elements are in addition to trying to figure out Char and her interesting background.

I ended up cheering for Char and felt great empathy for her. She wants to get back to her previous existence but it doesn't seem possible....or is it?

Highly recommended.
This is an excellent example of some of the best of Dale Cozort's writing. While there were some places it meandered, overall the plot is tight enough, and the loose ends are wrapped up by the end of the book.
This is a detective mystery story set in rural Texas with convincing and fascinating science fiction aspects. What I really enjoyed about this one is the way it incorporates about a dozen distinct secondary characters with a complex plot, without ever becoming confusing to read. Instead, it's engaging all the time, gripping at times, and just when it seems to be petering out, there will be a plot twist that grabs you once again. One or two plot developments are predictable, others are surprises. The main characters are mostly 20-something singles with life issues typical of that age group, this providing context for their adventures in this mystery story. Characterization is good even if few of the characters go through much development or change as a result of the story. The main male character learns a fair bit about himself and life. The main female character, Char, undergoes the most dramatic, adaptive change through the story. The most interesting characters are probably Char and the female Sheriff, making this as engaging to female readers as to males. The story kicks off with a small group of twenty-something friends playing night time paint ball in a wooded area on a farm, when they are attacked by a spear-wielding woman. One of the group is killed. (Of course the local sheriff finds this a rather suspect scenario.) One or two interesting insights, but don't expect to have your mind expanded by this story. Just expect an entertaining read. If you enjoy detective stories, you won't find your enjoyment diminished by the Science Fiction thread. If you enjoy Science Fiction, you'll enjoy it being presented as a detective story.
Good read.
